Grass Valley FRC

We are a community based organization which acts as a central hub to services that enhance the lives of families by connecting them to resources through a relationship based approach. The FRC is designed to assist families to become self-sufficient by providing innovative programs that address prevention, intervention, and supportive services such as parenting education, child development, health and wellness, budgeting, advocacy and parent leadership.

The FRC has a family friendly environment where parents can utilize our computers for job search; resume building, and internet access while their children play in our child development room. Currently we have grants that provide scholarships for swim lessons and support for parents through:

PROMOTORA PROGRAM

Is a home-based culturally and linguistically appropriate program designed to incorporate strategies to bridge language barriers and promote child health and development through a holistic family strengthening and self sufficiency approach.

  • PROMOTORA HEALTH EDUCATION/PROMOTION AND DISEASE PREVENTION PROGRAM

Program Summary: Culture plays a powerful role in individual health attitudes and behaviors, so it is critical that health education/promotion efforts be culturally responsive. In order for an individual to seek appropriate treatment or medical care, incorporate prevention education; adhere to treatment regimens the education and promotion efforts have to be both culturally responsive and delivered by culturally competent individuals.

  • PROMOTORA COMMUNITY INTEGRATION PROGRAM

Program Summary: Most child maltreatment studies have found a relationship between the quality of a parent's social support network and risk for neglect. Sierra Nevada Children's Services Promotoras provided family support services that were designed to strengthen and stabilize families, increase parental abilities, provide a safe and stable family environment, and enhance child development.  By building on past successes, Sierra Nevada Children's Services Promotoras has enhanced services by providing multiple intervention strategies. Strategies that include parent education programs that focus on enhancing parental competencies and promoting healthy parenting practices, provisions of social resources, education on family cohesion and self esteem to mediate the negative effects of economic problems, and child care resources.

P.L.A.Y. (PARENTS AND PROVIDERS LEARNING ACTIVITIES YEAR-ROUND)

Is a child development program that parents can participate in by dropping into the FRC at any time or by joining a parent-led P.L.A.Y. The activities available through PLAY are designed for parents to learn about and support their child's development while have an opportunity to visit with other parents.

TOT'S AND TWOS CLASS

This program is designed for children and parents - guiding parents on the value of interactive play with their toddlers. The activities include social development and skills, language, fine motor, gross motor, creative expression, nutrition, and developing and encouraging curiosity and wonder.

SWIM LESSON SPONSORSHIPS

Because of the generosity of the Welz Family Children's Foundation, the SNCS FRC is able to coordinate the opportunity for children to participate in swimming lessons who would not otherwise be able to participate, due to financial limitations. In the United States, drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death for persons aged 5 to 44. The goals of this program are:

  • Each child and parent will significantly improve water safety skills, swimming ability, and confidence (neuromuscular-coordination and strength - capacity is variable and dependent on the age of the child).
  • Parent education will include that swim lessons are never a substitute for constant and arms-length supervision when a child is near any waterway.
  • This opportunity will expose children and their parents to another form of exercise.

NURTURING PARENTING/EDUCATOR WORKSHOPS

These workshops are designed to help parents have a better understanding of their child's development, in addition to connecting with other parents. Workshops are the 3rd Tuesday each month - evenings 6:30 to 8:00. (click here for workshop schedule) - child care is available with a $5 fee - if you reserve your place before each class.
