"Linking resources and advocating
for and with families
and community is a key role of a family resource center"
FRC's are effective when based on research that
demonstrates best practices in family support programs and family
resource centers. The positive outcomes for families have been demonstrated
in several studies across the nation. A family resource center provides
an array of services and activities that are integrated, comprehensive,
flexible and responsive to communities' identified needs. Some of
the core services are parent education, child development activities,
resource and referral, drop-in availability, peer-to-peer supports,
life skills, and advocacy.
A family resource center
is a natural vehicle for building a strong healthy community. It is
in the ideal position to develop collaborative partnerships with all
facets of the community: residents, parents, business, civic groups,
political leaders, grass-roots groups, public and private leadership,
faith-based organizations, and community institutions like schools,
hospitals, and law enforcement. Linking resources and advocating for
and with families and community is a key role of a family resource
center. To improve the outcomes for families and their community a
quality center works to kindle and support efforts that engage all
facets of the community in community-building activities.
Research and evaluation
have demonstrated that there are positive short-term and long-term
outcomes for children and families who participate in family support
principles and family resource center services and activities. By
capitalizing on family strengths and increasing protective factors,
the FRC creates an environment which encourages families to use and
maintain their skills within the community and become contributing
members of that community.
