"Using the gifts and talents of community members to create opportunities for families and children"

Philosophy
Every community has the capacity to meet the needs of it's residents by tapping into the talents of local individuals, neighborhood associations, and community organizations.

Mission Statement
"A healthy community atmosphere, which supports and strengthens families, ensures the well being of its children. Community Network for Children and Families, a community-based collaborative, is devoted to building a community environment full of opportunities for families and children."

Background
Community Network for Children and Families (CNCF), a division of SNCS, is a grassroots collaborative funded through Sierra Health Foundation's Community Partnerships for Healthy Children and Family Preservation and Support. CNCF revolves around offering community members opportunities to volunteer on projects and with strategies that strengthen support for children and families in western Nevada County. We focus on conflict management, creating affordable recreation for children, and parenting. In 2000, CNCF became a division of SNCS.

The Community Building Project

The Community Building Project concentrates on five subsidized apartment complexes in Grass Valley. The Community Liaisons work to develop programs and activities within the complexes and refer residents to community resources. The programs and activities currently running within the complexes include a monthly newsletter created by a collaboration between the Community Liaisons and the residents, and Homework Club. Homework Club provides children with help on their homework, creates opportunities to interact with other children from the complex in a positive environment, and allows participants to enjoy some free snacks.

The Community Building Project also encompasses the Neighbor to Neighbor Network, a parent mentoring program. The Neighbor to Neighbor Network Family Night is held the third Tuesday of every month in the community room of the Oak Ridge Apartments. It includes free dinner for all in attendance, and after dinner parents participate in a discussion facilitated by someone skilled in the topic at hand. Meanwhile, the children enjoy supervised play, craft groups, or homework help in the other room.
