Recycling — it’s the right thing to do!

Children are the best recyclers! Often it’s the kids who bring home from school the message to their parents that recycling is important to the health of our planet. They know that a healthy planet means clean air, clean water, and plenty of habitat for all the animals they love so much. Did you know it can also mean more money for your children’s schools?
Nevada County Recycles continues to provide assistance to all of Nevada County’s schools, public and private, in setting up and maintaining waste reduction and recycling programs. Many of the schools have benefited from not only smaller garbage bills (which frees up money for school programs or charitable causes), but also the good feeling brought to the students and staff when they see that they can make a difference.
Why recycle? Most families know that recycling saves resources, and means less land set aside for landfills. What is less known is the positive effect on energy savings and greenhouse gas emissions.
For example, recycling one ton of paper saves 463 gallons of oil, and 587 pounds of air pollution, which has a measurable effect on global warming. When your children put their paper in that recycling bin, they are helping to prevent further pollution of our planet, as well as ensuring that more funds are available to their school when they aren’t going out with the trash – it’s a ‘win win’ for everyone.
Recycling anything produces the same kinds of benefits, whether it’s aluminum, glass, plastic, metals or other materials. Nevada County Recycles encourages families to do their part, both at home and in school, to reduce the amount of waste you create, to reuse items wherever possible, to compost and recycle everything you possibly can. Teach these important values to your children, or — let your children teach you!
