Books: The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Contributed by UC Cooperative's Extension to Succeed Program

Published in the Holiday 2005 Issue of the Family Post

The holidays will be here before we know it! Time to start writing your gift list and making a plan for shopping. Think about the young children you have in your life. Do they really need another video game, stuffed animal, or more toys? Probably not. Why not consider giving children the gift that keeps on giving? Books!

Studies show that young children who are surrounded by books typically grow up to love books and enjoy reading. This translates into achievement in reading which is a strong indicator of school and life success. If the children in your life don't live nearby, consider recording the books on tape so that they hear you reading the story to them. Children are more likely to develop a strong foundation for reading if their literacy experiences are anchored in relationships with people they care about. Just think of the wonderful memories you will also be creating for the children.

Keep in mind:

  • When purchasing books for children, look for high quality literature. Research indicates exposing children to these types of books is essential to their literacy development.
  • Younger children will benefit from cloth or board books as they are more durable for infants and toddlers.
  • Children enjoy books about things they are familiar with — cars, animals, household items, etc.
  • Look for books that have bold, colorful illustrations and simple story lines.

Help a child succeed with a good book —the gift that keeps on giving!
